CLUB PROJECTS 2011-2012

Tasker’s Chance Garden Club has been very successful with its recent fundraising efforts. This past year the Christmas Greens Sale, and the ongoing sale of Miss Helen Smith’s Garden Notes of An Artist and note cards raised additional monies for our civic projects. Every member has devoted hours to make all of these efforts a success. In addition, the annual dues paid by each member contributes to our ability to give back to the Frederick community.

CITY HALL and THE BOATHOUSE AT BAKER PARK
The Fountain Garden beds, at the front of Frederick's Historic City Hall, represent a new project for the Garden Club, beginning with Spring, 2011. The beds'  design follows  a popular architectural landscaping trend of the mid-1800's, recognizing  that City Hall was completed in 1862. The majority of the plants introduced are perennials, and the color of  the flowers are the red, white, and yellow of the Maryland State flag. The Garden club was responsible for  the design, planning, installation and maintenance of this new project. Miss Mott’s garden, located on the Church St side of City Hall has been maintained by the club since its beginning.  The garden honors Miss Mott, who was one of the club’s founding members. Today, perennials as well as annuals add a "pop" of color. Watering is contracted by the club for upkeep.
The Boat House at Culler Lake is a year round project where Tasker's maintains the landscaping and plants annuals for seasonal color.  We water, prune, pick up garbage, weed and sweep the steps leading to the building.  This building is featured many times throughout the year during special city events. 80% club participation

CITIZENS NURSING HOME and TANEY AVE SENIOR CENTER
Tasker’s Chance has a history of being involved with this county owned nursing home. The “Butterfly Garden” was established in 1987 and in 2001 our club helped to fund and over-see the renovation and re-landscaping of the courtyard garden. Presently, club member Jeannette Shoemaker is diligent about keeping a fresh floral arrangement at the front desk of the home year round, using flowers from her own garden when they are in season, but the rest of the time, the club funds the project. At the Taney Center, club members led the seniors in projects that they could take home including an Easter dish garden, Fall Pumpkin arrangement, Valentine flower vase, Summer Flowers in a Mason jar and small container with begonias. These various projects are done with the folks at the center and they can then take them home. 10% Club participation

FREDERICK CITY HANGING BASKETS
Member Marcia Hall was head of a committee funded thirty hanging baskets in downtown Frederick. We gave a substantial donation and several other members of our club were part of the committee. The goal of the group is to have sixty hanging baskets adorn the streets each year and currently there are thirty-six beautiful hanging baskets downtown. 15% Club Participation representatives on committee, 100% Club Participation with donations

GARDEN JOURNAL AND NOTECARDS
Tasker’s members will again devote time toward the sales and marketing of the club’s publication Garden Notes of An Artist and boxed notecards. We also sold gift packages of notes and Miss Helen books at the Market Place during the Beyond the Garden Gates tour. This requires contact with local retailers and non-profit organizations. 10% Club Participation

CHRISTMAS GREENS SALES
Each year, TCGC makes and sells decorated and undecorated boxwood trees to raise money for our civic projects. In 2010, we made 48 trimmed trees and 28 untrimmed trees and sold some larger trees and wreaths, all made by club members using greens from our own yards. Each year trees are donated to various nursing homes. 95% Club Participation
